The first NHS Primary Care Walk-in-Centres
were established pilot sites in 1999/2000. Like NHS Direct, they
are a key part of the Government's plans to modernise the NHS. People
will be able to get face-to-face information and advice (including
self-help advice) and treatments for minor conditions, at convenient
times (for example 7.00 a.m. - 7.00 p.m. and at weekends) and in
places that are convenient for them.
They will complement and supplement existing family doctor services
by providing the sort of access that some people need. Walk-in Centres
are nurse-led services, that provide minor treatments, health information
and self-help advice. They will not replace the highly valued family
doctor services, but will add to them, providing the convenient
access that some people need. In doing so this will help people
make better use of the NHS, help professionals make the best use
of their skills, and respond to modern lifestyles.
