NHS Direct Online was launched in December 1999.
It provides a gateway, via the Internet, to healthcare information
and advice. It also offers users of the service the opportunity to
call the NHS Direct helpline (0845 4647) and speak to a nurse advisor
- should they still have some concern after receiving the information.
NHS Direct Digital pilots were announced in March 2001. The aim
of these pilots is to use digital technology to deliver modern healthcare.
The service is accessed through home television sets, enabling users
to book appointments with their GP and have conversations and consultations
with NHS Direct nurses via the Television screen In addition, the
services will provide users with access to a comprehensive range
of Healthcare information and advice through the television. This
will be similar to the information also provided via NHS Direct
Online and will include audio and video clips on specific conditions
and illnesses.
